Sore Feet

Spent the morning in Hampstead Heath and the afternoon exploring the London Bridge and the Tower Bridge area. I discovered that my comfy gray boots are not so comfy after the first mile or so. Shoe fail.

Hampstead Heath is HUGE. It's like a leafy oasis amidst the hussle and bussle of Camden and it's only a 10 minute walk away. Loads of people were jogging and walking doggies (I got to pet some! Don't worry, I held my composure and did not use my squealy puppy voice - that would have been very unBritish of me). There are benches everywhere and I found one in the sun to sit at a while (nearly fell asleep, mmmm, sunshine). I think I will be spending much more time here.

After lunch I took the tube to London Bridge, which surprisingly was not all that interesting (it's basically a bridge). On the other hand, the Tower Bridge was very grand and completely overrun with other foreigners (mostly French and Italian). I was rather timid with taking my camera out at first, wanting to look like a local, but I eventually embraced my inner tourist and held it in plain site when I wasn't taking snapshots. I compensated by jaywalking whenever possible just to remind myself and other tourists that unlike them I can often fake knowing what I'm doing (despite getting lost at the London Bridge Station and sitting at the wrong bus stop for a few minutes, but we'll pretend that didn't happen).

After crossing Tower Bridge I walked around the outskirts of the Tower of London which, despite its name, is very un-tower-like. It's really a fort more than anything and though it disappointed my towery expectations it was still ten times more interesting than any fort or tower in the US.

Right, off to nurse my poor blistery feet. I'll know to wear my hiking boots next time...

Cool! Glad to know you didn't squee over the dogs and that despite nursery rhymes to the contrary, London Bridge appears to be structurally sound. Enjoy your sunny bench, and hope your feet feel better soon. Miss you already!
